Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation seals car showroom over tax default

The tax department sealed property of Chevrolet Gallops automobile showroom who failed to pay Rs 53.36 lakh.

To achieve the pre-decided target of generating revenue over property tax, the tax department is now sealing the properties of defaulters. For the current financial year, the civic body has a target of Rs 850 crore as property tax income. On Monday, the tax department sealed property of Chevrolet Gallops automobile showroom who failed to pay Rs 53.36 lakh.

The civic body started the drive on February 1, 2019, and in five weeks they have managed to recover more than Rs 100 crore and has sealed more than 25,000 commercial properties. "Every year we seal the properties of tax defaulters who fail to pay their tax within the stipulated time. We serve them two notices, and if they still fail to pay the tax or ignore, we seal their property," said a senior tax official.

"During the drive time, we have sealed around 2500 commercial properties, and have managed to recover Rs 100 crore of dues," added the official. On Monday during the drive, the maximum number of properties have been sealed in the West Zone (260) followed by North-west (184), South (177), east (137), south-west (134), central (155) and in north zone 100 properties were sealed.

In the current financial year, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) received Rs 811.05 crore as property tax.
