The citizens of the city are grappling with swine flu disease, revealed the weekly health bulletin of the health department of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). In 2019, the civic body has already reported 65 cases of H1N1 and two deaths.

The two deaths were reported last week itself. A 59-year-old male resident of Saraspur was admitted to the Shardaben Hospital on January 14 and died the next day on January 15. He was also suffering from asthma said the press release. Yet another death was reported at the civil hospital where a 45-year-old woman resident of Maninagar was admitted on January 12, who died in a week's time, on January 19.

There has also been a rise in cases of water-borne diseases. Until January 19, a total of 239 cases of gastroenteritis were reported. During the same time, 129 cases of jaundice and 125 cases of typhoid have been recorded. It is unusual for such a high number of cases to have been reported during winter. According to doctors, majority of the cases have mainly been caused due to water contamination.

"There are many areas where we have found contamination in water. We regularly take water samples from households to check bacterial levels and chlorination levels in the water. We distribute chlorine tablets round the year in slum pockets," said Dr Bhavin Solanki, in-charge medical officer of health, AMC.

Meanwhile the health department had sealed Sri Ram Parlor located on the campus of the Civil Hospital after they received a complaint about a puff with maggots inside.
