Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation removes 8936 political posters, banners

A day after Election Commission's code of conduct came into effect ahead of the Lok Sabha polls 2019, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has swung into action. From Monday, they have started removing political posters, banners, graffiti, wall posters and flags from the civic body's jurisdiction.

Seven teams of all the zones were deployed on Monday to remove the political messages as per the guidelines of the election commission. The estate department has worked under the defacement of property act. The team has collectively removed 8936 political campaign material which includes 6516 writings on the wall, 351 posters, 383 banners, 1717 miscellaneous items.

The highest number of messages and posters were removed from west zone —4494, followed by east zone —1235, central zone — 1207, north zone —1158, north-west zone — 411, south-west zone — 298 and south zone — 164 such political signage posters were removed. Such drive of removing posters and banners in Ahmedabad took place after a long time. In May 2018, the former civic chief had started a campaign to remove all posters and graffiti which were defacing the public properties. For that campaign, the civic body had roped in the estate department and ex-army personnel. A lot of police complaints were filed under section 3 of the Provincial Damage of Public Property and IPC 268.
