Going against the high court’s stay order, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to start the process of recruiting class 1 officers in the civic body. The standing committee of the will discuss the proposal of starting the process during a meeting, scheduled to be held on December 5. However, it is learnt that the decision has not gone down well with the opposition and some employees of the AMC.

According to the proposal, the selection criteria will be modified with those having second class degree in graduation can also apply. Earlier, first class in graduation was the essential qualification. Talking on the issue, leader of opposition, Badruddin Shaikh said: “How can the AMC go against high court stay order and start the process for recruitment? This is violation of the stay order.” The high court had issued a stay order on the recruitment in February after some AMC employees filed a case against the civic body for not having its own rules and regulations for the same.

The employees stated that the civic body did not follow any rules and appointed class 1 employees. The class 1 officials consist of deputy municipal commissioner, assistant municipal commissioner, additional city engineer and deputy engineers. Following the stay order, the recruitment process was stopped. According to high court’s stay order, no advertisements or recruitment of class 1 officials can take place unless AMC frames its own rules and regulations for recruitment. However, now the modification in the recruitment process has raised many questions among the AMC employees and the opposition party.

Deputy municipal commissioner for administration, IK Patel said: “We are on the lines of framing rules and regulations for recruitment. If approved by the standing committee and the state government, there is a probability that the case will be dismissed.”

On the other hand, Congress cried foul stating that the agenda includes modification in rules only for few posts and not for all, which indicated that the AMC was in no mood to frame rules for all class 1 posts.
