The entire city may soon brighten up with energy-efficient street lights.

Taking another step in conserving energy, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will carry out a pilot project as part of which it will replace 12,000 conventional street lights in the west zone with LED lights. Depending on the success of this project, total of 1.2 lakh street lights in the city will be changed to LED.

The civic body had initiated the project to replace streetlights one-and-half years ago. However, the existing 1.2 lakh street lights continued to function with the conventional sodium and CFL lights. This resulted in annual electricity bill of Rs1.2 crore for streetlights in the west zone alone.

The 12,000 streetlights in the west zone — Navrangpura, Paldi, Chandkheda, Naranpura, Sabarmati, Juna Vadaj, Vasna etc — will be replaced in Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode.

Elaborating on it, an official of the light department requesting anonymity said, “Under the PPP mode, the agency will convert the streetlights into LED at its own cost. The LED streetlights will help in reducing 40% of electricity bill i.e. Rs48 lakh annually. In return, the agency will be paid 50% of the annual savings.” For this, the civic body had invited Expression of Interest (EOI) from agencies to participate in PPP mode. The agency hired will change the existing 70 watt streetlights to 45 watt, 250 watt lights to 135 watt and 150 watt ones to 60. Apart from this, AMC has installed 8,000 streetlights on new roads in all the six zones.

The civic body will adopt a similar model for the remaining zones if the project works. 18,000 streetlights in new west zone and 7,000 in central zone will be covered after the pilot project.
