Ahmedabad multiplexes not to screen Padmaavat

Won’t screen the film until dispute is resolved, say a number of theatre owners in Ahmedabad

The multiplexes across Ahmedabad are not willing to risk the safety of viewers and its property as more and more of them have decided to refrain from screening 'Padmavat' till an amicable solution is reached. PVR and Drive-in cinema said on Tuesday that they will not screen the movie. However, they are hopeful that a settlement would be re-ached. A meeting of Multiplex Owners Association was held on Tuesday when most of the owners decided not to screen the movie. These included all the six multiplexes of City Gold, Devi Multiplex, Wide Angle, K Sera Sera and AB Multiplexes. However, more joined the list as the day progressed. In a statement PVR Cinema said that it will not screen the movie in Ahm-edabad. PVR Cinemas is not screening the movie Padmavat at their theater in Ahm-edabad City"," said a statement of the multiplex chain.

As per discussions in the grape wine in multiplex industry in the city, Cinepolis, located in Ahmedabad One mall, was silent on whether it will screen the movie or not, but management of Ahmedabad One mall opposed the screening of the movie fearing that any disturbances in the theatre, may have effect on the rest of the mall as well. Mall management did not want to risk the well being of the other shops in the mall. A well-placed source told DNA, "We are in a wait-and-watch mode. We have so far not taken any stand, but the security of the viewers and the mall is of utmost importance."

Drive-in cinema also said it will not it will not show the movie till an amicable agreement has been reached. "We are the most concerned about the security of the viewers. We do not want to compromise on this aspect," said Rakesh Patel, director of Wide Angle. Patel recalled that during the release of Amir Khan-starer Fanaa over a decade ago, when one person immolated himself in the theatre. He does not want a repeat of such instances.

However, sources in the multiplex industry are hopeful that soon the opposition would die down. The movie was screened in Mumbai on Tuesday and reports indicate that there is nothing derogatory about the Rajputs as being presumed by the protesters.
