The construction work for the underground section of the Metro rail will not affect daily life activities on the surface, the Metro-Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad Company Limited said on Tuesday. The construction work will start next week and Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) will be used for the job.

Explaining how it will work, Ahmedabad's retired IAS officer – IP Gautam, Managing Director of MEGA, said it will be like rats cutting through something. These machines have big jaws. People on the surface will hardly get to know that drilling work is going on. We have two years' time to finish the work, he said. The TBM will have wheels to cut through, an excavation chamber, and other tools. It will also have machines working behind to lift the mud or sand out. We will have the machinery to dispose it off in every 2 km on the surface.

He said that once the machines were below the surface, there would be no way to get them out unless the work was done. The machines will also lay the tracks, and the network will have two tracks. As of now, we are not a major underground network. As per our survey, we might come across some damaged pieces of hand pump pipes in the route, he said.

In Bangalore, a tunnel boring machine was severely damaged during construction process, and because of that, Metro rail work was stalled for ten months.

MEGA is constructing a 32-km rail network for the first phase of the Metro rail project, out of which 6.3 km is below the surface in the East-West Corridor starting from Thaltej to Vastral Gam.

The construction work will start from Apparel Park depot, and the machines will make way for a circular tunnel. MEGA is going to develop the stretch in two phases. In the first phase, the machines will work on the route from Apparel Park to Kalupur railway station. The diameter of the route will range between 1 metre and 20 metres.

The underground section will have four stations including Kalupur station – which will become the junction point, merging with the existing railway station and the upcoming Bullet Train station. The other three are Kankaria station, Shahpur station and Gheekanta station.
