Uttarayan is always a big festival for Amdavadis, but this year, the price to pay for it has also risen manifold.

As per the casualty figures released by the 108 Emergency Service, there has been an almost three-time jump in injuries caused by deadly manjas. This does not include other Uttarayan-related injuries such as falls from terraces, which is categorized as non-vehicular trauma.

The number of cutting injures dealt by glass-coated kite string reported in 2019 is the highest in three years for both Ahmedabad and Gujarat. Against the 25 and 28 such cases reported in 2017 and 2018 respectively, this year saw 86 cases of manja injuries.

An astonishing 206 people were cut by kite string across the state in 2019, as opposed to the 68 and 74 cases reported in 2017 and 2018 each. And the figure is likely to increase as cases continue flow in over the next few days.

Jaswant Prajapati, chief operating officer of GVK EMRI (Emergency Management and Research Institute), that runs the 108 emergency service in the state, sees no visible reason for the sharp rise. "It could be that this time, we were able to reach almost all the emergencies. Since urban areas report more Uttarayan related causualties, we pressed additional ambulances into service in such areas," he said. Ten additional ambulances were pressed into service in Ahmedabad alone, which has, on an average, 50 to 53 ambulances.
