All 39 stalls at the popular eating hangout was demolished as a part of AMC’s parking drive
One of the most popular hangout place of the city where families used to throng, was demolished by the civic body on Wednesday morning. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) claims that they have cleared 2,050 square meter town planning road free from encroachment.
"We have opened the town planning road after lifting 39 stalls, 2000 chairs, 250 tables etc. All the food stalls have been lifted from the place. It is now encroachment free. For this drive, we have roped in 32 staff members, 50 labourers, seven cars and two JCBs," said Arjav Shah, deputy municipal commissioner, AMC.
"There was no parking space available for visitors, hence, this area used to witness traffic jams, especially during evenings," added Shah.
The standing committee chairman, Amul Bhatt said, "We will keep vigil on the street so that the people can't come back to the same spot. The street vendors were illegal and we are not going to entertain such encroachment."
In 2009, when the Gujarat High Court asked the civic body to make the town planning road free from encroachment, an encroachment removal drive was done. After that, the estate department of civic body had undertaken a mini drive twice to remove the encroachment from the stretch but nothing worked.
Last week, street vendors like cloth and footwear vendors were removed near to the law garden. When Guruprasad Mohapatra was the municipal commissioner, he was planning to declare this area as a no-vehicle zone.
A regular visitor, Ajay Patel said, "I have been coming here to eat pizza since my teenage days. This is the place where we used to enjoy with family and friends. This place used to cater to the needs of everybody's tastes. I hope someday again they will be here."
There was a war of words between shop-owners and AMC members. One of the shop-owner could not bear the shock and fell unconscious.
