The muslim women from across Ahmedabad are using their afternoons to build a network, learn and share. An initiative by a 50-year-old Taskeen Sareshwala, director of Shama group of schools in Ahmedabad, called ‘Discover yourself through Islam’, is bringing them on a platform to not just understand the religious texts but also learn and unlearn issues that they face involving many fun activities.

Nazia Bhavnagri, who studied clinical psychology and a mother of three children, said, “While we have read our religious texts during the childhood, understanding The Quran in real life makes me more relatable. Only now, I understand how beautifully Islam is related to science. We want to pass it on to our children that core values of Islam are rooted in science.”

The sessions are held at Taskeen’s residence in Paldi where she involves women in games, quizzes, role plays, etc. The gatherings are not just to socialize but to learn and do something constructive, said another participant. The sessions have evolved around topics like how relevant is todays education, global food dishes, gratefulness, relationships, families, etc.

“I also run an initiative called ‘Happy Homes’ where I teach ways of life through Islam including how to adjust, how to behave, moral values, how to live in the society in best way, how to maintain good relation with people around you, etc,” she said .

“The misconception of a madrassa needs to be changed. Education and religious beliefs can go hand in hand. I do go to gym and swimming but wearing a Hijab. A hijab does not stop me from doing any activity,” Nazia said. Another participant, Aasiya Kankoriwala, said, “This madrassa that she runs also has sessions on teenagers. So take care of the psychology otherwise it will just remain a session of religious fanaticism. They have their own set of questions, so once they cross age of 10, these kids who attend such sessions remain very sound.”
