As part of a massive study on Ahmedabad, masters programme students of CEPT university have found that the city barely has any open space for the citizens. The explorative project was a part of a studio 'Understanding the city', offered to foundation programme students of a masters degree, where 150 students took up 150 blocks of 1 square kilometre each to analyse the areas including roads, buildings, pipes, population etc.

Speaking about the same, professor Rutul Joshi, studio coordinator said, "Through the studio, we have made our city as the textbook. Students spent four months on the field, interacting with the local residents, understanding the issues, tracking the garbage truck, studying the transportation system, stormwater lines, land usage, etc."

Sharing the findings, he said, "The per capita average public space here is 5 square metres, excluding streets which is really less. Whereas London is 27 and Amsterdam is 45. If we minus the institutional areas, we are left with nothing. Hence streets are being used as public spaces. We also found that 25 per cent of the city earns less than Rs 20,000 per month. Through this studio, we hope to train future planners in a way who can address this problem and bridge the gap."

The university will be hosting an annual exhibition of students work over the weekend. Speaking about the same, Bimal Patel, President, CEPT University said, "The aim of the exhibition is to showcase students work and also assess tutor's way and their methodologies of teaching. A good institution is known by its students work."

Commenting on international students, Patel clarified that the university might look at it in the future. At the moment, we have a lot of exchange programmes, through which they are coming.
