In yet another classic betrayal to the people of Ahmedabad, the civic body has been deferring the 24X7 water supply promise which they had promised almost five years ago. The pilot project, that was conceptualised in 2014 and was supposed to be flagged off in Stadium and Jodhpur, was estimated at Rs23.41 crore.
The civic body had spent Rs Rs46.16 crore on installation pipeline in these two wards, said an RTI filed by Faizan Shaikh a resident of Shahalam. The project is yet be kicked off in Jodhpur where Rs12.52 crore has been spent, the RTI says. The project in here is worth Rs34.69 crore, it said.
The civic body has spent Rs11.47 crore of which Rs3.42 crore in Stadium ward. The amount has been spent on installing pipes as well. The AMC, however, says the project is nearly complete.
"We're working on it and looking forward to completing the project," said Rashmin Shah, chairman water and sewage committee.
"We have come out of few hurdles. The work in Jodhpur is complete. A part of the Jodhpur ward also comes under Sarkhej where we installed water meters. One such place in Anandnagar, a part of Sarkhej ward," said Shah.
However, Shah didn't say that how much of the total work is over. "The policy is being modified. Also, several metres were stolen, which has delayed the project," said an official working for the project.
Earlier, the rate for 20,000 litres per month consumption was around Rs240. Extra amount would be charged every thousand litres. Also, the usage rate ranges between Re1 (for carpet area up to 15 sqmt) to Rs12 (for an area more than 1000 sqmt).
Around 1000 meters were installed in Ramdevnagar, Anandnagar and areas near by to Yogashram society in Jodhpur ward.
"Several households in Jodhpur have received the meters. We'll complete the work by 2018," said Jagdish Patel, city engineer, AMC.
The former leader of opposition Badruddin Shaikh said it is a waste of money by the municipality.
