The joint commissioner of police (JCP) sector-1 JK Bhatt on Saturday explained the events pertaining to a former Asaram sadhak’s claim of having a witness who could prove the self-styled godman’s alleged sexual exploitation of female followers at his ashram.
Addressing the media, Bhatt said that Amrut Prajapati, the former aide, called city CP Shivanand Jha late on Friday. “Prajapati had called the CP on Friday night and claimed that he has a woman who could uncover the truth behind Asaram’s activities. The CP had in return asked him and the witness to come to his office and give their statements in the matter. Despite waiting all day on Saturday, neither Prajapati nor the witness turned up,” he said.
Following this, members of the SIT, formed to investigate the alleged sexual molestation and torture of two Surat-based sisters, approached the disgruntled sadhak at his residence in Odhav.
“Prajapati, however, did not respond and refused to have the witness give a statement to woman police DySP Dr Kanan Desai and zone-5 DCP MS Bharada who had gone there. He instead said that the witness would directly give her statement in court,” Bhatt said.
