Ahmedabad has emerged as the cleanest city in Gujarat, according to the third edition of Swachh Survekshan in 2018. On Saturday, the rankings of clean cities were declared under the flagship programme of central government's 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan'.

The Centre had initiated the clean city rankings in 2016. In the annual survey, Ahmedabad had secured the 14th position in 2016, as well as in 2017. The city has improved its ranking by two places in 2018. The cities were ranked on three different parameters, including Service Level Progress (documentation), direct observation and citizen feedback categories. Total 4,000 points were given.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation chief Mukesh Kumar said that the city managed to improve its ranking because of several campaigns and equal participation of citizens. "The sanitation level in the city has improved and it is clearly visible. We have taken several measures like segregated waste collection, recycling of waste and compost plants at residential and commercial units," he said.

"There is equal participation from citizens, who are now following the principles of 3Rs - reduce, reuse and recycle, to maintain and support cleanliness. The recently-announced 'Beat the Plastic' theme has also gained momentum and we are aiming to improve the ranking further by the next edition of Swachh Survekshan," said the commissioner.

Former mayor Gautam Shah said that our efforts have paid off. "To improve our ranking, we have involved the people via Swachhta Rounds in each ward. This year, because of positive feedback from the people, the city's performance improved," said Shah. According to the health and solid waste committee, chairman Dinesh Desai's door-to-door waste collection and IEC activities have played a major role in creating the concept of cleanliness among people.
