Employees of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), working in Danapith building, were literally in a holiday mood on Tuesday. Work at the corporation’s new building, ‘Sardar Patel Bhavan’ came to a halt due to power cut for around three hours.
Speaking to dna, deputy municipal commissioner for Central zone, M Thennarasan said, “The few hours of power cut occurred as the underground cable at the construction site beside the AMC building had got damaged.” Construction work is on for a new building, which will be an extension to the present building. The plan is to accommodate more offices under one roof.
On Tuesday too, work was in progress at the site. During digging work, one of the JCB machines destroyed the underground cables, leading to power cut in the building.
The entire staff had to come out as the building turned dark.
The blackout also raised a question on the functionality of solar panels installed on the rooftop to run the lights.
Explaining the failure of the solar panels, one of the officials of the light department said, “Solar panels covert sunlight into Direct Current (DC) and the rectifiers convert it into Alternating Current (AC). This can be done when cables are intact and there is no electricity. However, when cables are at fault, the system becomes useless.”
