The owner of a chemical manufacturing unit in Surat has been arrested by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly paying bribe to an official of Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB).

The incident had come to light on November 2 when cash worth Rs1.50 lakh was seized from an Innova car in which Rajesh Patel, regional officer with GPCB, was travelling to Ahmedabad. The cash was found in envelopes bearing the name Mangalmurti Bio Chem Pvt Ltd of Mangrol, Surat.

The ACB said that Patel was booked and arrested as he was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the cash.

The agency also questioned the unit's owner Bharat Tank who denied that he had given the cash to the GPCB official and claimed that he had given empty envelopes to him for keeping documents at the end of a public hearing related to his unit's expansion project. ACB, however, said that evidence collected by it showed that Tank had indeed paid the cash to Patel as bribe.

The ACB said that a case was registered under Prevention of Corruption Act against Tank at Surat Rural ACB police station on Tuesday, and he was arrested.
