Ahmedabad: 'Chalo Charkha Ramiye' initiative to go national

To promote hand-spinning among citizens, Chalo Charkha Ramiye, a Charkha movement that began in Ahmedabad in 2013 to now go national. To celebrate 150thbirth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the team from Ahmedabad will now be travelling across the country to impart hands-on learning experience of Charkha to those willing.

Avani Varia, spinning force behind contemporary Charkha movement shares, "Now that we have received a very good response from people here, we are all keen to reach out to others in different parts of the country. Since it is 150th birth anniversary if Gandhiji, we aim to reach out to 1.5 lakh people."

"We had started on October 2, 2013, and used to hold Charkha sessions once a month at Satyagraha Ashram, Kocharam in Ahmedabad. But over the years, we also visited many schools and different cities to hold workshops. While we have not scientifically proved it yet, but a Charkha session activates left and right brain well. It also helps hyperactive children become calmer and heal. The entire session is extremely therapeutic", she said.

The idea is also to promote hand-spinning to help senior citizens and disabled as a mode of income and revive Khadi which is India's only handwoven textile.

Varia who is a heritage expert is also attempting to bring the movement into the education system. Her team will visit organizations, schools across the country who wish to get hands-on experience of Charkha.
