Ahmedabad: Call centre duping US citizens busted

During an investigation by the cyber cell police station, officials busted an illegal call centre which was being run inside a factory located in Bapunagar area. The investigation revealed that the accused were duping US citizens by posing as Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officers.

According to cyber cell officials, they received specific information that for the past couple of months, an illegal call centre had been operational inside an undergarments factory located near Viratnagar crossroad in Bapuangar area.

Acting on the information, a team raided the factory and unearthed an illegal call centre that was functioning on the third floor of the factory. During the raid, eight accused including the owner of the call centre were arrested from the spot and around Rs 2.5 lakh worth of valuables, comprising eight desktops, one laptop, 11 mobile phones, a magic jack device and documents of US citizens were recovered from them.

Further investigation revealed that the call centre was owned by two accused identified as Vikram Sukla and Nikul Chauhan, who were running the call centre for the past six months inside the factory and were recruiting people from other states.

As per police officials, the accused used to call US citizens, posing as IRS officers. They would tell the victims that their tax amount was pending and if they don't pay the due amount immediately, the IRS would raid their property and seize it. Using the same modus operandi, the accused duped over 1,000 people and extorted money from them. Further investigation regarding the matter is on.

OWNER HELD

Cyber Cell had received an information regarding a fake cyber cell in a factory near Viratnagar. During the raid, eight accused including the owner of the call centre was arrested.
