Ahmedabad: Brace Yourself deluge is coming

After Wednesday’s downpour, a deluge is in the offing for Ahmedabad and Gujarat – the meteorological department has predicted.
Almost all districts of Gujarat, on Wednesday, witnessed medium to heavy rainfall with thunder and lightning.

Jalalpore in Navsari district recorded five inches of rainfall, highest in the state.
Navsari town and Savli in Vadodara drenched in next at about four inches of rain  each.

Ahmedabad recorded 26.8mm rain during the day. City’s east zone witnessed the highest 60.66mm of rainfall in 24 hours ending 4pm on Wednesday, followed by south zone’s 56.34mm.

The west zone recorded 38.44mm rain, while new west zone remained ‘dry’ at 18.80mm.

Seven dams in Gujarat are brimming with water, forcing the state irrigation department to put them on high alert. Five others from the 202 irrigation schemes have been put on the ‘alert’ list. As per information provided by the state government, eight talukas witnessed more than three inches of rainfall, while 18 others registered two.

Gujarat, so far this season, has received 61.68% of its average annual rainfall.
As far as the coming days are concerned, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warning of severe rain in the state – courtesy offshore developments along Western Ghats and upper air cyclonic circulation over Gujarat and Saurashtra regions, said Jayanta Sarkar, regional director of the Met department.

The heavy showers are predicted for all districts of Gujarat, Diu, Daman and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Saurashtra specifically will record heavy rains in the next 36 hours.

IMD has also issued warning to fishermen to not venture into sea due to unexpected increase in wind speed. “Currently, wind speed is recorded at 30-45 km/hr. It may increase to 55 km/hr. Fishermen are advised to not venture into sea,” said Sarkar.
