As election dates draw close, the city police is on high alert and trying all possible ways to stop the flow of liquor into the city. City bootleggers, though, have also evolved and started making their own branded liquor in Ahmedabad itself to sell them at the premium liquor rates. So much so, that one recent arrested accused was adding his own flavours to replicate the original brands.

One such incident took place in the Odhav area of the city and it came to light when the team of DCP Zone-4 Akshayraj Makwana raided a liquor den in the area, revealing that a bootlegger identified as Sunil Nagar was not only dealing and selling Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), but was also making his own supply in a small room.

It emerged during the investigation by the police that Nagar was buying empty bottles from Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat scrap dealers and was filling the bottles up with low quality liquor. Despite not having any technical knowledge or machinery background, he had made special equipment and machines to fill up the liquor into the empty bottles.

According to police officials, Nagar was not just refilling the bottles with inexpensive brand liquor, but he was mixing some kind of flavour into that liquor so that it would taste just like premium brand liquor.

Akshayraj Makwana, DCP Zone-4, stated that, "The accused has a taste sense of every premium band liquor and could recognise the brand without even looking at the label. He was adding flavour to low-brand liquor so that it could taste exactly like the premium brand liquors and they would fill it into the respective bottles."

"For example, if it was an empty bottle of Jack Daniel's whiskey, the accused would fill it with low-brand whiskey, but he used to add flavour to the whiskey, after which, it would taste exactly like the original one," added Makwana. It was also revealed that while making the liquor, the accused had original samples of many kinds of premium liquor with him and used to take a sip of the "rebranded" liquor and the original alternately, to match the taste exactly.

Modus Operandi

  • Bootlegger identified as Sunil Nagar was not only dealing and selling IMFL, but was also making his own supply in a small room.
  • According to cops, he was also mixing some kind of flavour into that liquor so that it would taste just like premium brand liquor.
