A manager with a private bank in Ahmedabad has lodged a complaint against her husband and in-laws for demanding dowry and harassing her for giving birth to a baby girl.
A manager with HDFC Bank’s Ranip branch, Manritkaur Khasariya, 30, has been living with her parents at Abhishek Apartment in Nava Vadaj for the last five months. After her marriage to Jagdeep Singh in November 2009, she had moved to his house at Dhanlaxmi Society in Odhav.
In her complaint to Naranpura police on Tuesday, Manrit claimed that her parents had given 15 to 20 kg of gold ornaments along with a Swift car as a wedding gift to the couple. A month after the wedding, her in-laws, including mother-in-law Raspalkaur and sister-in-law Avinashkaur, started harassing Manrit for not bringing enough dowry. They alleged that her parents had given fake ornaments, and forced her to get cash from her parents.
According to the complainant, Jagdeep, too, joined his kin and allegedly sent Manrit to her parents’ place several times to pressurise them for money. Being pregnant, she maintained her calm. However, she finally left her husband’s home five months ago and moved to her parent’s place. When she gave birth to a girl, her in-laws allegedly refused to accept her, as they wanted a boy. Manrit has stated in her complaint that her sister-in-law came to her parents’ house several times, and insulted her. She finally lodged a complaint under section 498(a) of IPC, which deals with dowry-related harassment.
Teacher raped for over a year
The incident of a teacher being raped repeatedly in a car at Limbayat has shocked citizens and the police. The 22-year-old woman was being victimised for a year, but had maintained silence due to a threat from the accused, who is absconding.
A resident of Limbayat, Nidhi (name changed) has accused Manoj Jadav of abducting her in his Nano car, parking it at a vacant place, and raping her. According to the complainant, Manoj had committed the crime several times over the last one year. After committing the gruesome act, Manoj used to drop the victim near her house.
“Manoj threatened Nidhi of killing her siblings, if she spoke to anybody about the incident. Nidhi got frightened by his threats and so remained quiet all this time. However, she finally gathered strength and lodged a complaint,” an officer at Limbayat police station said on condition of anonymity.
According to the officer, Manoj, a resident of Shankarnagar Society in Parvat village, used to abduct Nidhi by showing a big knife. Each time Manoj committed the crime, he used to play music with full volume inside the car. The police returned empty-handed from Manoj’s house on Wednesday evening, as he fled moments after the complaint was lodged.
Sources said the duo were in a relationship for 3-4 years. When relations soured, Nidhi filed a complaint against Manoj. The police are also looking into the love angle in their investigation.
