Ninety percent fatal accident victims are pedestrians and two-wheeler riders. Thanks to the lack of good footpaths in the city as well as four-wheelers. A study by the Centre of Excellence in Urban Transport of CEPT University has found that cars are responsible for fatal accidents as against freight vehicles which has recorded 21% reduction in accidents.

Analysing the data of helmet compliance, a team of researchers from CEPT university found that four-wheelers emerged as the predominant responsible mode for serious accidents, followed by two wheelers.

As per their data, there were 82 serious cases of car accidents were recorded in 2009 as against 151 in 2016. The team also found that 90% of road mishaps occuerd when there was no footpath. Out of a total of 1500 km good roads, only 230 km stretch had footpath.

Over 50% riders used helmets

CEPT University conducted the study with Ahmedabad Traffic Police to develop a methodology for assessing the compliance level of helmet usage in Ahmedabad. The team found that more than 50% of the riders wore helmets. The team analysed videos of 15 locations and 70,000 riders during peak and normal hours on weekdays and weekends.

The data was collated and expanded for the entire day based on the two-wheeler traffic temporal profile available for 2014. "The overall helmet compliance level for two-wheeler users was observed to be 52.3% which is a positive number. This has happened merely because of more deployment of cops at those junctions and effective drive of the traffic cops. Out of the total riders, 92% were male and 8% were female riders with a helmet compliance of 51% in male riders and 48% amongst female riders. We found higher compliance in the morning peak for both male (57%) and female (53%) riders. However, the compliance is seen to be less in the afternoon inter-peak (49%), evening peak (48%) and night off peak (30%)," Professor HM Shivanand Swamy, head of CoUT said.

With helmet: Shah-e-Alam has lowest number

Shah-e-Alam had the least percentage of riders with helmet (27%) followed by Chandkheda (33%), Vishala Circle (35%) and Virat Nagar (39%). The highest helmet compliance was observed at Kargil (77%) followed by Duffnala (72%) and Kalupur railway station (70%). The remaining 8 locations have a medium compliance level ranging from 35% to 70% riders with helmet out of total riders. Swamy added, "So there is no difference between west and east Ahmedabad. We have presented our findings to the traffic police and they will now strategise based on our data by strengthening force at certain junctions."
