More than 7000 cases were registered against vehicle owners for illegal parking. Traffic Police initiated a drive to enforce rules and bring offenders to book for parking vehicles illegally, which is one of the major reasons behind congestion. This comes after the HC pulled up the civic body and police department for traffic woes on July 16.

With the help of local police, traffic cops have registered several cases of illegal parking under Section 283 of the Indian Penal Code and violation of CPS notification that prohibits parking within 50 meter of crossroads. In the past four days, 7,274 cases were lodged against vehicles found illegally parked, and Rs 7.27 lakh was collected as fine. The officials towed 1,304 vehicles found parked in ‘no parking zones’, and collected Rs 6.66 lakh as fine.

Besides, 234 cases were lodged under Section 283 of the IPC, and 34 vehicles were seized. Officials also registered 188 cases for violating the under 50-meter notification and seized 113 vehicles. Under Section 207 of the IPC, around 358 cases were lodged.

Akash Patel, ACP of Traffic, said: “The drive will continue till people take it seriously. People should know that we are doing enforcement to recover fine from offenders, it is a way to warn them so that they don’t repeat their mistake again.”

“People should also know that at the end of the day, it will be the commuters who will be affected if the roads are not cleared and we are just doing our duty.”
