While the police personnel have time and again stated that the cyber crime offences are increasing, the Ahmedabad police department is taking proactive steps to tackle it. In a recent decision taken by Ahmedabad police, the complainants — who usually had to go to cyber crime unit — can approach cyber crime units in respective police stations.

This initiative was particularly taken to increase the efficiency of solving cyber-related crimes.

From 3,000 applications of cyber crime in 2016 and 4,000 in 2017, the number of complainants for cyber crime shot up to 5,000 in 2018.

Looking at this, the police also needed to delegate the smaller crimes to local police stations.

"We needed to unburden the cybercrime unit and delegate smaller cases to local police stations. Civilians will also benefit from it since it will be easier to reach out. Moreover, there will be more police officials who will be trained and therefore more equipped for fighting cybercrime," AK Singh, Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad shared with DNA.

The police stations that have a higher frequency of complaints will be given on-the-job training. And those that receive less complaints will get training on a specified day,” Rajdeep Zala, DCP, Cyber cell said.
