A complaint of abetment of suicide was lodged with Nikol police station on Wednesday after a 35-year-old woman killed herself in her apartment, while police officials were outside. The incident took place on Tuesday evening after the woman's neighbours accused her of being involved in prostitution.

The incident took place in Devanand apartment in New Ranip. The deceased was identified as Chandrakantaben Soti, 35. The complaint was lodged by her husband Arvind Soti, who works as a manager at HDFC bank.

In his complaint, Arvind said that for the past three months, he had taken medical leave from his job to rest at home. He said that on Tuesday, his wife heard some people shouting outside their house. When she opened the door to check, the neighbours gathered outside started abusing her, calling her a prostitute. He soon went outside to confront the neighbours, and when the situation got worse, he called Nikol police for help.

When police officials reached the spot, they found one of the neighbours, identified as one Rashmikant Nagar, and his wife yelling and abusing Chandrakanta. According to them, she was involved in prostitution and hence a bad influence on their neighbourhood and society at large. In the middle of the exchange, Chandrakanta reportedly went inside her house and locked herself in.

After making several attempts to convince the woman to let them in, police officers broke open the door to find her hanging from the ceiling fan. She was immediately rushed to a private hospital but was declared dead on arrival by the doctors.
