Uttarayan may just be a day away but the festival is taking its toll on birds and animals already. In fact, rescue centres across the city are registering a rise in a number of animals and birds being brought for string and other Uttarayan related injuries.

Those in the know said this has been a trend for the last many years wherein injuries are being reported several days before Uttarayan.

"Nowadays many people also go out during the days of Uttarayan so they fly kites the day before the festival to make up for it and as result birds get injured even when Uttarayan is yet to begin in full swing," said Sherwin Everett, the curator of Jivdaya that treats injured animals and birds.

He said that most of the string injury cases are that of pigeon although there are some kites, Ibis and cranes too. The centre has so far received 803 birds in Jan of which 30% had to be brought to the centre due to string injuries. Sunday alone saw the centre treating 109 birds being brought for treatment.

The Bodakdev rescue centre has so far received 14 Uttarayana related injury cases. It is the centre that is coordinating the Karuna Abhiyan of the state government in Ahmedabad. An official said that the facilities like every year are geared up to ensure that a maximum number of birds are saved. "But this year we have had 2,300 volunteers who have registered to help in the Karuna Abhiyan in Ahmedabad alone which is the highest so far we have seen. We also have 115 doctors who have volunteered their service," said the official.
