Four years after the pilot project was initiated, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's ambitious plan to provide the city with 24x7 water supply is nowhere close to fruition.

In fact, a question in the assembly revealed that even Jodhpur ward that was selected for the pilot project is also yet to get the water supply.

Ongoing work on waterline connections has ensured that the ward is still waiting for the project to take off.

In fact, the question posed by MLA from Jamalpur -Khadia Imran Khedawala also revealed that of the five areas that fall under the ward, three are yet to get pipeline connection while two are getting water for just six hours.

The state also revealed that it has so far spent Rs 35 crore on the project.

In reply to the question, the government said that it had so far got four representations about the lack of 24x7 water supply. It further added that it has constructed five overhead tanks in each of the five areas of the pilot project ward with all the necessary mechanical and electrical connections. The distribution network from the tanks has also been made.

However, only Anandnagar and Novex in Jodhpur have so far got service connections and the two areas initially received water for four hours but now it has been increased to five to six hours.

In the other three areas, the process to provide pipeline connections to residents was still in the process. It said that the 24/7 supply can come into force after the connections are provided to all the houses in the three areas.

It, however, did not give a time period by which the work will be finished. It should be noted that the 24/7 water supply project (work on which began in 2014) was also to introduce water meters. Earlier, it had been reported how 4000 of the 10000 water meters bought for the project had been stolen from the civic body's warehouse.

It should be noted that apart from Jodhpur, the pilot project was also extended to Stadium and Vadaj wards of the city.
