Less than six months before the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress party on Monday announced a jumbo body of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) with more than 400 office bearers and executive committee members. The number of office bearers was less than 150 the last time round.

The Congress said in a press release that party president Rahul Gandhi had approved names of office bearers and executive committee members of GPCC.

The list has 22 vice presidents, including Jagdish Thakor and Soma Patel, 43 general secretaries, including Nishit Vyas and Mansinh Dodia, and as many as 169 secretaries.

The party has named 11 spokespersons, including Manish Doshi as the chief spokesperson. Sandip Patel has been named the treasurer, while the list also includes six secretaries (protocol) and seven joint secretaries.

In addition, 48 people have been named to the executive committee. They include leader of opposition Paresh Dhanani, MLAs Shailesh Parmar, Bhikha Joshi, Vajesinh Panada, among others.

Senior leader Ahmed Patel, former CM Madhavsinh Solanki, and former GPCC presidents Bharatsinh Solanki, Arjun Modhwadia, and Siddharth Patel, are among the 41 named as permanent invitees. Fifty-four people, including MLAs Punja Vansh and Rajendrasinh Parmar have been named as special invitees.

"The jumbo state body is in view of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Many of them have strong ground connect and have been chosen on the basis of their performance in last year's assembly elections," said a party official. A party leader from Surat said that many young members have been given a place among the office bearers. "Many young leaders who have the potential to emerge as leaders of the future have been given a place in the office bearers list," he said.

Party names in-charge for 26 Lok Sabha seats

The Congress party also named in-charges for the 26 parliamentary seats in the state. A release said that Sagar Rayka has been appointed as in-charge of Ahmedabad East seat, and MLA Niranjan Patel of Ahmedabad West. Indravijaysinh Gohil has been named as in-charge of Gandhinagar Lok Sabha seat. The Congress had lost from all 26 seats in the 2014 LS elections.
