For Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) it seems old is not gold. According to party candidate, Rituraj Mehta, who is contesting against BJP patriarch LK Advani from Gandhinagar, two factors, Advani's old age and resentment among BJP workers against the party stalwart, will help him sail through the Lok Sabha polls.

Speaking at a press conference held at his office here on Thursday, Mehta, a builder, said a young leader can do more for the constituency than someone who is 85-year-old.

Mehta, whose office displays large posters asking voters whom they will choose, a 49-year-old or a 85-year-old, said that Advani despite being elected from Gandhinagar never bothered to visit his constituency.

“The only time he makes an appearance is when he has to file his nomination or when he has to seek votes,” said Mehta.

When asked how would he counter the BJP, Mehta said it should not be too difficult given the fact that there is resentment among BJP workers against Advani. “My feeling after interacting with people is that Advani’s opposition to Modi has angered BJP workers and they may not work to ensure Advani’s victory. I have age on my side and I have interacted with voters and the response has been positive,” he said, adding that being a local he was better suited to represent the problems of Gandhinagar. “Unlike Advani, I live here and know what problems the people face and if elected I will not be an absentee MP,” said Mehta. He said AAP had already started door-to-door campaign and would soon be carrying out rallies too. “For us the biggest issues are corruption and inflation. Both rob the common man,” said Mehta and added that he would have worked with equal enthusiasm had the party selected any other candidate from the seat.

Regarding switching over from real estate to politics, he said that he was here to do social work. “I know about several builders who do social work and this is my way of contributing to the society,” said Mehta.
