A cyclonic system concentrated over northeast Gujarat has resulted in heavy rains lashing the district of Banaskantha on Monday. The extremely heavy rainfall has disturbed life at Dantiwada, Amirgadh, Deesa, Dhanera and Palanpur talukas of the district, where more than 2,200 people were displaced. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF), along with the Indian Army and Air Force, saved over 500 people who were stranded in waterlogged areas.

The state government’s control room at Gandhinagar continued to receive emergency calls on Monday, with stranded people at different locations calling in for rescue and relief. At 342mm, highest rainfall was recorded at Dantiwada, followed by Palanpur (255mm), Amrigadh (246mm) and Dhanera recording 216mm of rainfall.

Meanwhile, an inflow of 1.16 lakh cusec of water and over 1.50 lakh cusec, the waters at Sipu and Dantiwada dams increased above the danger level. As a result of this, the administration had to release water from these gates and people living in low-lying areas nearby.

On the other hand, the Sabarmati was also overflowing from both ends, with the water income at Dharoi dam reaching 1.41 lakh cusec. The administration will release 50,000 cusec water into the river and nearly 500 villages in Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad districts have been put on alert.

Meanwhile, chief minister Vijay Rupani on Monday morning reviewed the situation from Gandhinagar. “The weather department has forecast more rains over the next two to three days. We have alerted all administrations to keep a constant watch over the situation. PM Narendra Modi also called me in the morning to assess the situation,” the CM said.

He also said that heavy rains in the neighbouring state of Rajasthan have made the situation worse. Jalore, Pali and Sirohi districts in Rajasthan have also received extremely heavy rains, causing floods and leaving displacing several people.

Three ministers – Dilipkumar Thakor, Shankar Chaudhary, Keshaji Chauhan, along with Union home minister Haribhai Chaudhary have been stationed at Banaskantha and Patan, while IAS officers JP Gupta and Harit Shukla have also offered their services.
