The Gujarat government is all set to revise the Jantri rates of land in state and has has started the preparations for the same. The revenue department has been analysing the existing jantri rates and will evaluate them for different lands as per their location. The revenue department has started this procedure after the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) audit report tabled in the state Assembly on March 28 pointed out that the state government incurred a huge loss of revenue by not revising jantri rates.

Revenue minister Kaushik Patel said, "We are studying the present rates of jantri and have asked my department to make an analytical report on the same. It came to our notice that jantri rates were not rational at many places, so we have decided to rationalise them and will revise the same accordingly. Officials will go through the process scientifically and will decide the schedule of new jantri that can be implemented."

"The revision of jantri is also required to give a push to development in some areas. It is also necessary to increase jantri rates of land for the sake of revenue," the minister added.

A senior government official said, "Jantri rates can be increased by 50 to 100% of existing rates. The process of resurvey of land is underway and is nearing completion. This resurvey has been made with the help of Geographic Information System tagging and that would help the process of fixation of new jantri rates as per the location of parcels."

The Gujarat government had last revised Jantri rates in 2011 and had decided to revise the same every year, but that could not happen for political reasons, and many in the realty sector were not in favour of revision of jantri rates.
