According to the Indian Metereological Department's (IMD) forecast, the prospects of heavy rains in the city are fast approaching.

While light rains have been predicted for the week, the intensity of the same is likely to rise as the weekend draws close. The IMD has also warned of heavy rains in the districts of south Gujarat from Wednesday.

The weather department said that isolated places in the city would witness light rains till Wednesday. Rain intensity will increase from Thursday onwards and the weekend may receive widespread rains.

The IMD has also warned that isolated areas in south Gujarat will receive heavy rainfall on Thursday and Friday while light to moderate rainfall is likely at isolated areas in the region through the week. Regions of central and north Gujarat, too, may receive rainfall in the weekend.

Gujarat has been receiving stagnant rainfall for about 11 days now while Ahmedabad has barely been seen the monsoon so far.

Although rains are more or less normal in the state, there is a wide gap across different regions. Yet, 44 talukas have received below 125 mm of rains. Kutch district has been affected by drought as it has received merely 46 mm of rainfall, which is just over 11 per cent of its average of 417 mm rains.

North Gujarat is another region to have received scarce rains. It has received 204 mm or 28.27 per cent of its average of 723 mm rainfall. East central region is better placed with 337 mm or almost 41 per cent of average rains. Saurashtra has received 405 mm or almost 60 per cent of average rains, while south Gujarat has fared the best with 1066 mm or over 74 per cent of average rains.
