Almost a year after its formation was announced, a commission set up to look into the Naliya rape incident has not sought representation from a single person or talked to anyone, women's rights activists in the city alleged on Thursday.

The Naliya rape incident involved the gang rape and blackmail of a woman who was forced into a sex racket after the accused, some of whom allegedly were local BJP leaders, spiked her drink and raped her.

The allegations came after the activists made several attempts to get in touch with the commission to make a representation in the matter.

"The commission was set up to look deeper into the allegation that apart from the victim, 35 other women had been dragged into the sex racket. But, even after almost a year of its formation, no public notification seeking representation from anyone in the matter has been made," said Meenakshi Joshi, of the forum of concerned citizens for the Naliya incident.

Joshi said nowhere does it happen that a commission is formed and that no one is ever called to make a representation even after one year in the matter.

"This alone shows the government created the commission not to go deeper into the matter, but to pacify the uproar that had erupted after the incident," said Joshi.
