The last day of filing income tax returns (ITRs) for self-assessment witnessed a relatively less rush on centres across the city due to the electronic filing facility.

However, due to technical problems and heavy traffic on the server, the income tax department had to extend the last day of filing returns from July 31 to August 5. As many as 9,39,755 ITRs were filed from Gujarat in e-filing mode and around 30,000 manually, said sources in the I-T department. So, a total of 9.69 lakh ITRs were filed from the state till July 31.

Among the state-wise data, Maharashtra topped the list with 21.87 lakh returns. Meanwhile, states like Karnataka (9.63 lakh), Delhi (8.87 lakh) and Andhra Pradesh (6.45 lakh) also got a mention in the list.

Monday was the last day of filing returns for taxpayers such as individuals, who have income from salary and/or interest, Hindu undivided families, businessmen and professionals whose income is less than Rs1 crore.

According to statistics available up to July 31, against a total of 3.065 crore registered users on the e-filing site, only 1.032 crore filed their returns online. However, in a statement, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said e-filing had increased by 48 per cent compared to last year.

“The e-returns filed during the current financial year — till July 31, 2013 — at 1,03,21,775 represents an increase of 48 per cent compared to figures during the corresponding period for the last fiscal, which was 69,63,056,” said CBDT.

According to the available data, around 62 per cent of the returns filed in India in 2013-14 were from people with income below Rs5 lakh. Only 25,604 ITRs have mentioned above Rs1 crore till July 31.
