Be it Facebook, Whatsapp, BBM, Twitter or any other social networking site, the youth in Gujarat are accessing all of them more through their mobile phones and lesser on computers. The net savvy youth finds mobile phone much more feasible, easy and faster than desktop PCs, notebooks or netbooks.

Till March 31, this year, Gujarat had a total of 12.7 lakh internet connections, including dongles, dial ups, lease lines and other means. Against that, nearly 96.38 lakh people are accessing internet on their mobile phones — 7.58 times higher than the number of internet connections.

Of the total Net connections in the state, only three lakh have installed broadband (>=256 kbps) connections while others have narrowband connections (<256 kbps). About 21.81 per cent of total active mobile users of Gujarat are accessing the Net through their cell phones. However, it is a trend all across the country.

In India, of the 72 crore active mobile connections, 20 per cent or 14.32 crore users access the Net. Among them, there is a total of 2.16 crore internet connections, including 65 lakh narrowband and 1.5 crore broadband connections.

The Performance Indicator Report for March 2013, released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) last week, revealed that UP (East) and UP (West) — having the largest number of mobile connections among states — top the number of mobile users accessing internet.

Of the 10.15 crore active connections together in both circles, there are about 1.48 crore mobile phone users accessing the Net. They are followed by Tamil Nadu (1.27 crore), Maharashtra (1.26 crore), Andhra Pradesh (1.03 crore) and Mumbai (1.02 crore).

However, percentage wise, metros top the chart. Of the total, 43 per cent or almost every second mobile phone user in Mumbai access the internet.

The mobile apps is one of the major factors pushing mobile users accessing internet, believes Pankaj Shah, Gesia president.

“Secondly, mobile penetration is much higher against PC penetration. Every household has one PC. But the same household has at least 3 to 4 mobile phones. And, it will continue to rise,” said Shah.
