Two-wheelers were involved in at least 60% of the accidents that took place in Ahmedabad in 2017, according to Traffic Police Department data obtained by dna. As many as 1,416 accidents took place in the city during the period, of which 839 cases involved two-wheelers while vehicles such as cars, buses, trucks and tempos accounted for 557 road mishaps.

Police officials said people riding two-wheelers tend to be more reckless. "It has been noticed on several occasions that majority of two-wheeler drivers don't follow traffic rules and often try to jump signals," said Sudhir Desai, DCP, Traffic Police. "Usually, they are the ones who cause accidents as they break traffic rules. Many also try to overtake in an inappropriate manner which sometimes shocks other commuters and leads to accidents."

The records also revealed that out of the total number of accidents last year, 287 were fatal, in which 294 people died – 250 men and 44 women. Apart from these, 329 cases of serious accidents were reported in 2017, in which 273 men and 70 women were injured. The data showed that 800 cases of minor accidents were also recorded during the period, in which 747 men and 214 women were injured. "It is possible that there is a higher number of men driving vehicles, and that's why there are more men who are reported to be injured.
