A regular runner from Ahmedabad, Piyush Shah, will attempt to get a mention in Limca Book of Records by running more than 180 km within 25 hours on treadmill in a local gym on Saturday. The current record holder is Michelle Anil Kakade (44) of Pune, who completed 171.2 km on treadmill within 25 hours.

Talking about how he got interested in running, Shah, 54, said, “I have been actively involved in sports since childhood. Swimming, skating and yoga were my hobbies. When I was in my mid 30s, I thought of doing something for fitness. So, I decided to walk from my home in Ahmedabad to nearby villages and gradually extended it to walks to Dakor, Chotila, and Sreenathji.”

Recalling his introduction to marathons, Shah said, “I slowly came to a stage where I could walk 14 km in 90 minutes. I saw on TV around 2004 that a participant completed Delhi half marathon of 21 km in 80 minutes. That is when I thought I should also participate in marathons; but due to lack of internet, I could not succeed in participating in 2004 or 2008 Delhi marathon. Finally, in 2009, I ran the Mumbai full marathon of 42 km in five hours.”

Shah has participated in various full and half marathons - in Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Singapore. His fastest timing for half marathon is one hour 38 minutes and that of full marathon is 3 hours 59 minutes. In Singapore, he completed a 100-km stretch in 15 hours and 48 minutes.

Shah will attempt his latest feat under the guidance of gym owner Rajan Dalal, who was trained at Cooper Clinic in Texas, USA. He is getting nutritional guidance from Dr Shirish Parikh and dietician Alka Sanghavi. About his daily regime for fitness, Shah said, “My schedule is very simple. I am an electronics’ worker with a 9 to 5 job. So, I sleep by 9 pm and wake up at 2.30 am. I start with exercise, yoga and then switch to running. My food habits are not extraordinary; I have simple Gujarati food. I make no extra effort for fitness but avoid excessive eating.”

Shah’s dieticians talked about how they were going to keep him going for those 25 hours with balanced and nutrient food and fluids. According to Dalal, earlier, runners were not involved in any other forms of exercise, which resulted in weak bone density. “So, it is necessary for every runner to keep in mind that with running, other exercises are also important to maintain your body’s flexibility. The basic elements of fitness are body composition, muscle strength and flexibility, which should be balanced,” explained the fitness expert.
