50 child labourers rescued from Rajkot

The officials of the district social defence office raided a dairy plant in Sama Kantha and jewellery making units of Shyamnagar and found these children living in misery

Around 45 to 50 child labourers who were forced to remain confined in a small room working in a pitiable condition in dairy and imitation jewellery-making units were freed by the social defence department of Rajkot district from the city on Thursday. The officials of the district social defence office raided a dairy plant in Sama Kantha and jewellery making units of Shyamnagar and found these children living in misery.

The officials and Thorana police raided unit of Gopal Dairy run on cooperative basis in city and found 25 to 30 children working in the packaging unit while more than 35 children reportedly escaped from the back side door. In another raid, the officials found 20 children working in imitation jewellery-making unit.

Kanaksinh Jhala, district social defence official said, “When we were going back after raid at dairy, local people informed us that two imitation jewellery unit been operated in Rajaram society also had some child labourers. We went there and rescued 24 children from pitiable condition who were forced to work. These children are from states other than Gujarat and were brought here through the channel of agents. These children were paid less and forced to work for long hours.”

“The jewellery units were managed by women and we have filed a complaint with Thorala police. They will be executed under Juvenile Justice care and protection act. We will hand over the custody of these children to the state government of their concerned states so that the responsibility of the government will be fixed to look after these children and they do not return here for labour work again,” Jhala added.

The officials found the children living in non-hygienic and misery condition.
