With over 5 inches (over 100 mm) of rainfall in a span of just 8 hours (10 am to 4 pm), monsoon decided to do some catching up as far as Amdavad was concerned, creating a record of sorts for this year’s monsoon season.

The city that saw the rain do a disappearing act for the last two weeks found itself at the receiving end of monsoon fury as incessant showers that began around 9 pm on Wednesday night left the city waterlogged in several low-lying areas. Peak traffic hours saw commuters battling both water-logging and traffic jam, and the situation only worsened in the evening.

Several incidents of tree-falling, cave-ins and underpasses being closed were reported from the city. According to the Met department, the city received 108 .8 mm rain between 8.30 in the morning and 5.30 in the evening, the highest recorded this monsoon. As per AMC data, the city received an average of 94mm rain (between 10 am to 4 pm).

But the worse is far from over as the Met department has predicted further heavy rainfall for the city in the next 48 hours. There is a well-marked low pressure area lying over West Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas of Gujarat, said IMD Gujarat director Jayanta Sarkar.

“As a result, the latter will receive fairly widespread rainfall with heavy to very heavy rainfall in some parts of the state including Saurasthra,” said Sarkar. He said that as far as the city was concerned, it would receive rainfall for another 48 hours. “But the intensity will reduce,” Sarkar added. Meanwhile, the city airport saw flights being delayed by 15 to 30 minutes. “No cancellations, however, happened due to rain,” said airport director RK Singh.

The city has so far received 216mm of rainfall since the beginning of monsoon. Ahmedabad has received almost 34% of its average rainfall of 694mm.

Meanwhile, across the state 145 talukas in 24 districts received rainfall on Thursday with the highest being recorded at Morva Hadaf in Panchmahals which received 144 mm of rainfall. As per the Met department 12 districts in the state have received excess rainfall. No casualties were reported from any part of the city or the state till the time of going to print.

The state has received more than one-fourth of the average rainfall of the last 30 years so far, state government data shows. The average rainfall in the state between 1983 and 2012 is 798 mm. As against this, the state has already received 219.4 mm rainfall as of July 4, which is 27.5% of the average rains of the last 30 years. Last year, the rainfall received in the state as of July 4, was only 56 mm, almost one-fourth of this year.

Barring Kutch, rainfall so far has been quite good across the state, especially in parts of south Gujarat and Saurashtra.
