289 water samples failed lab test in July: AMC

Water sample collected by the health department of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) failed laboratory test in July, officials said on Monday. Around 3,686 water samples were collected in July, out of which 289 samples failed bacteriological test.

Incidentally, July saw the highest number of water samples fail bacteriological test this year so far. 

“We regularly collect samples of water from the pockets where cases of water-borne diseases are being reported repeatedly,” said Dr Bhavin Solanki, in-charge medical officer of health, AMC.

“Some of the pockets of Behrampura, Gomtipur and Damilimda have more water borne cases compared to other pockets. These areas have water contamination issue due to age-old drainage system. In some places, people use motors to get water which also results in water contamination.”

According to the official, south zone is most affected in terms of reporting cases of water-borne diseases. Danilimda and Behrampura are in the south zone. Moreover, maximum water samples with no chlorine were also found in the south zone.

In July, 6,898 samples of water were taken from south zone, out of which 355 samples were found to contain no chlorine. 

From north zone, 6,752 samples were collected, out of which 33 had no chlorine, A total of 424 samples were found to contain no chlorine, out of which 38,123 samples were collected in July.
