A brain-dead man became the 16th heart donor from Surat on World Heart Day on Friday, giving a new lease of life to as many as six people.

Ramesh Dhorajia, 53, who worked as a diamond polisher in Surat, collapsed at work on Monday morning. He was rushed to Kiran Hospital, where a CT scan revealed he suffered brain hemorrhage.

After doctors declared Dhorajia declared brain-dead on Thursday. Officials of Donate Life, an organisation that works for organ donation in Surat, got in touch with his family and convinced them to donate his organs.

“The family members agreed to donate his heart and other organs since they felt that his organs would give a new life to several people,” Nilesh Mandlewala, president of Donate Life, said.

Donate Life official said that Dhoraji’s heart travelled 269 km from Surat to Mumbai in 107 minutes and was transplanted into 42-year-old Mumbai resident Moinuddin Shaikh at Global Hospital in Mumbai. Shaikh, a taxi driver, had been suffering from heart problems since 2012.

Dhorajia’s kidneys and liver were accepted by Ahmedabad-based Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) for transplantation later on Friday, Donate Life officials said. His eyes were donated to Lokdrishti Bank.

This was the 16th heart donated from Surat in the past 22 months. Donate Life has so far been involved in the donation of 224 kidneys, 89 livers, six pancreas, and 188 eyes.
