Xavier's will soon add some more feathers in its cap. The premier educational institute is all set to introduce four brand new courses in its premises by October 2011. These courses will be one of its kinds in the city and perhaps in the state. The four courses will be - MBA in biotechnology, MSc in biotechnology, MSc in Applied Computer Science and MA in Journalism.
According to principal of St Xavier's College, Father Vincent Braganza, the process of introducing the course, which is part of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Xavier's and US-based Marquette University in 2008, has already begun.
"The concept of these four courses is quite new for Indian students. After doing some research in the US we thought to start these courses, which will be made available for students across the country along with the Xavierites," said Braganza who got back in the college after a month-long tour to the US to study about these courses and other educational initiatives.
According to the proposal Marquette University will be conducting these courses. For this purpose they would train and induct Xavier's faculties into the course. However, as these are all master-level courses designed by the US, Indian students will have to take three years to complete, since Indian students take 15 years to graduate while a student in the US takes 16 years. The one year difference has to be incorporated within the course duration.
"As a reputed institute we induct good students and also for the new courses we will be recruiting our students directly. These students would complete required credits or prerequisite works for their respective masters' degrees for a year and than they would join the master programmes," Braganza said.
However, initially these courses will have only 10 to 15 seats but later it may increase. The total expense on these courses would be around Rs20 lakh to Rs25 lakh.
