Xavier’s College to offer new master’s degree

St Xavier’s College will offer a unique 12-month masters programme in Global Development and Research Methods from this year in collaboration with the Teesside University (UK).

This is the second time that the college will start a 12-month MSc course, the first one being in 2009 when St Xavier’s introduced a masters programme in Industrial Biotechnology Enterprise jointly with the University of Bath (UK).

The School of Social Sciences and Law at Teesside will coordinate the programme.

The purpose of this course is to give an in-depth understanding of development in the backdrop of globalisation while simultaneously providing advanced training in research methods of social sciences.

He said that the programme has two possible exit points. Students, who complete the first semester at St Xavier’s College, will be awarded a postgraduate certificate in global development. They can subsequently carry forward the credits and finish the remaining two semesters, after which they will get the MSc degree.

“Students will be exposed to two different kinds of learning environments. We are expecting autonomy soon. So, it will be a learning experience for us and will be useful when we look at developing our own masters and PhD programmes after we are granted autonomy,” said Father Arun D’Souza, programme coordinator
