Bangalore: For the first time, the government of Karnataka will conduct a census of children below 18 in the state under the 'Complete Census of Children 2010' scheme.
The Sarva Shikasha Abhiyan (SSA), Karnataka will conduct this survey, which will help understand the discrepancy between the numbers of children enrolled in the education system and those actually attending. "The SSA has already taken the initial steps. The government used to conduct a survey of children between the age group of six to 14, every year. This time, we plan to take a census of all children below 18," said an official in the SSA.
"The survey will cover all children in the government, aided and private primary, secondary schools, and pre-university colleges. This time round, we will also take a census of students studying in ICSE and CBSE schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas and Army schools," he added.
The SSA is planning to issue circulars with details of the survey to all the authorities concerned, including the Bruhat Bangalore Mahangara Palike (BBMP), departments of public instructions, labour, social welfare, and pre-university education.
The officers who have been deputed to conduct the survey have been asked to visit all houses, schools and PU colleges in the state.
"They will also visit all mines, hotels, slums and other organisations where children are likely to be employed," said the official.
"Every year, we find the actual number of children studying in schools quite different from those admitted. We'll be able to findthe reason for this. We don't want to miss out a single child. This time round we are planning an extensive survey. To get information of the kids below five years of age, we will go to their homes. To find details of older children, we will visit schools and colleges," the official said. The circular that the SSA will circulate reads: "Each school needs to provide the total strength of students, their names and other details like date of birth." The survey will begin inJanuary2010.
