When girls master the martial arts

The Saint Mira’s College recently felicitated six girl students for successfully completing their training in taekwondo.

The girls, Sayali Bhorde, Pallavi Khose, Archana Sharma, Kajal Madurai, Sheetal Gore and Shalu Raut, will be awarded certificates from Kukkiwon (South Korea) also known as the world taekwondo headquarters, as martial arts experts. The girls were training in taekwondo for the last four years under the guidance of their trainer Balkrishna Bhandari.

Bhandari said, “Nowadays attacks on girls have increased and it is not safer for them to venture outside alone. So, it is important for them to get some training in self-defence. It feels good to see the confidence in the girls when they walk on city roads without being afraid of eve-teasers.”

“We have been travelling in city buses for many years and were always scared to confront eve-teasers who have become a nuisance. Now the training in taekwondo has given us the courage to react to these eve-teasers,” said Sayali.

The girls had recently completed a ten-day training programme in Mumbai and took the poomase test, the basic criteria for Dan 1 grade in taekwondo.

The college has been conducting self-defence training for its girl students for the past 11 years and this is the third batch to get black belts.
