Mumbai University has received nearly 150 proposals to set up new colleges in the next academic year.
In the perspective plan passed recently by the senate, the university had outlined a need for 13 new colleges in Mumbai city, 18 in the suburbs, 12 in Navi Mumbai, 19 each in Raigad and Ratnagiri districts, 43 in Thane city and district, and 14 in Sindhudurg. The last date for submitting proposals was October 31.
The proposals will be sent to a review committee in December, registrar K Venkatramani said.The committee will look at various aspects of the proposals, including the background and financial strength of the managements, availability of infrastructure, and ownership or lease duration of land.
The final list of recommendations will be sent to the state government by December 31.
Last year, of 145 recommendations for new colleges, courses, and divisions forwarded by the university, 45 were sanctioned by the state.
