Looking at the manner in which talks are shaping, soon enough the state will host an exclusive university for folk studies.

The state department of higher education held a meeting with nearly 60 folk art experts in this regard on Tuesday and received unanimous support to set up such a varsity.

However, experts suggested that the state government wholly operate the varsity, instead of the university grants commission (UGC).

Higher education minister Aravind Limbavali said, “Irrespective of whether the UGC provides us with funds or not, we are sure that we will set up the Janapada university. But if they are ready to provide us the funds, we will make use of it.”

Limbavali added that the department will also appoint a special officer to execute the project.

G Narayana, a folk studies enthusiast, said, “Promoting a separate university for folk arts will help eradicate casteism. The education department should also try to introduce folk art as a subject in the high school curriculum.”

However, chairman of the Kannada Development Authority, Mukhyamantri Chandru, said that he would raise the issue in the assembly for discussion.
