Taking education beyond four walls

Eminent educators of Pune made a strong case for making school education holistic, while speaking at the special Teachers’ Day felicitation programme organised by DNA at Hotel Ramee Grand on Friday.

DNA felicitated five outstanding teachers, who by the sheer dint of their hard work in the field of education have made an indelible impression on the lives of thousands of students. Principals, teachers, directors of schools, who were also present at the function, shared their views on the best possible methods to shape the future of the next generation.

During the felicitation, Arvind Gupta, who with his out-of-the-box scientific toys, has simplified concepts of science for students, remembered his teacher Mrs Frey, who helped him hone his skills in English and mathematics.

“She really made a good impact on me, and that is why I got distinction in both mathematics and English in my final examinations,” he said.

Kalpana Gupte, deputy director of Indira Gandhi National Open University, Pune branch, stressed on the need for teachers to build up the self-esteem of students, besides helping them grow academically.

“We should tell them that there is no end to learning,” she said.
Shobha Bhagwat, whose name is synonymous with Garware Bal Bhavan, said that the real reward for a teacher is the success of his/her students. “The positive stories should be highlighted to ensure that they are emulated by many,” she said.

Pradeep Agashe, whose innovate methods of teaching science and mathematics have always struck a chord with the children, asked teachers to generate the students’ interest in the subject.
Similar sentiments were expressed by AL Deshmukh, founder of Himmat Shala which has brought light to the life of thousands of students who had failed to clear their secondary school certificate (SSC) examination. “Let us take education beyond the four walls of schools,” he added.
