If you are confused by the sheer number of schools promising anything from horse riding lessons to French class, perhaps it
is time to take a little bit of help from the state education department.

For, the state education department is mulling to set up an independent agency for accreditation of schools in the area. If implemented, the move will help parents make an informed choice for their children.

The agency is being conceived in consultation with Quality Council of India (QCI) to improve the overall standard of education in the state. The accreditation will also cover private schools in the state. Hasmukh Adhia, principal secretary, state education department said that they were in the process of planning a mechanism that will help parents choose good school for their wards.

"Parents are pretty confused when it comes to selecting the right school for their children. Often, they get influence by impressive infrastructure or popularity of a school," he said. Adhia said that parents often blindly get their child admitted to a school that charges exorbitantly high fees assuming that high price means high quality. "But this is not always the case," said Adhia.

The idea of independent accreditation body for schools is to know about the quality of education being provided in a school and to inform parents about the quality of a school."The areas which will be covered in the accreditation include number of qualified teachers at the schools, salary paid to the teachers, attrition rate of teachers, quality of education, overall hygiene, classrooms, recreational space among others. It will be on lines of 'Gunotsav' - the quality assurance drive in government-run schools," said Adhia.

However, the state government is first planning to build capacity for such accreditation agency in technical consultation with the QCI."We are getting technical consultation from QCI to help develop capacity for such accreditation agency," said Adhia.
