The health & family welfare and education department, Gujarat government, on Tuesday kicked off the School Health Week programme across the state. The endeavour aims to provide medical check-up to 1.5 crore children in eye, kidney and heart ailments.

The programme will also incorporate dada-dadi meetings - the ancient practice of taking health tips from one's grandparents. The programme will also stress on the importance of cleanliness, drinking water sources and nutritious food.

Jaynarayan Vyas, minister of state for health and family welfare department, education minister Raman Lal Vora, mayor Asit C Vora and municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra were present at the inaugural function at Tagore Hall.

Also present were 'Tapu' and 'Sunder Mama' of comedy serial Tarak Mehta ka Oolta Chasma fame, who attracted much attention from the children at the venue. In fact, Vyas advised children to be as healthy as Tapu!

The programme will focus on different aspects of staying healthy rather than just medical check-ups, said Vyas at the function.
In addition to these check-ups, on-the-spot treatment is also available. Medical cases can also be referred to civil hospital and community health centres, if need be.

Free spectacles, tips on a healthy lifestyle and 'super specialty treatment' for diseases like cancer will be provided free-of-cost.
Under this programme, mobile medical vans will also be sent to different districts in Gujarat to attend to ailing children there. Vans are well-equipped to perform minor surgeries.
